Do people still even wonder this anymore – the white after Labor Day question? For me the answer is a blatant yes, you can obviously wear white after Labor Day without so much as your grandmother blinking an eye (at least if said grandmother reads Vogue). Around 7th grade I remember feeling weird about wearing white after this closing of the summer season, like the sartorial gods had only deemed white appropriate for backyard BBQ’s and Puff Daddy’s white party. However, it is no longer 1999, and my mom no longer has to sign off on my outfit choices before I leave the house (actually she never did anyway). But even if she did, in 2014 white after Labor Day does not come across as an even slightly rebellious stylistic decision (maybe regretfully so, as questioning if something works adds that ambiguous element one may seek to achieve while still wanting others to surprise themselves by saying, “you know, I think it really does work”). ‘Winter whites’ were all the rage Fall/Winter 2013 completely desensitizing anyone still holding on to this outdated ‘rule of fashion’. Now white year round is just as commonplace as denim. I think we can all stop asking ourselves when white is acceptable and start coming up with new ways to be semi rebellious in our bodily adornment choices.
